This barefoot running shoe offers the perfect balance of "foot feel" and protection on rugged terrain. The Spyridon has a multidirectional sole with Vibram's 3D Cocoon technology. This allows for impact protection from stones and debris with minimal weight. The Spyridon has a sleek looking design with an upper made of stretch mesh and polyamide. It is a coconut active carbon upper which helps with breathability using 34% postindustrial coconut fiber. The sole is an XSTrek Vibram rubber and a 3 mm polyurethane insole with an anti microbial Dri Lex sock liner for a footbed. The closure of the shoe is a hook and loop which ensures secure fit. There are reflective applications for safety after dark, and the shoe is machine washable. If you've never run with barefoot shoes, it is highly advised to start out by running only a few minutes in the shoes at first. Try it out for about 10 15 minutes and gradually build up the time you run in them. Even if you feel good after 10 15 minutes of running in the barefoot shoes, force yourself to put your usual running shoes back on. Your body has adjusted to whatever type of running shoe you've worn, and it'll be a complete shock to the system if you run a few miles in the barefoot shoes having never run in them before. Here's a good article to refer to in order to figure out if you're ready for a minimalist shoe. I've never done trail running in barefoot shoes, so the Spyridon was my first experience. I had the great opportunity of getting knowledgeable information at a media event on barefoot running through Dr. The information he discussed with us was extremely useful in my introduction to barefoot running. We did a few exercises to test if we were ready for minimalist running as well as positioning and foot strike exercises. I've been a heel striker for as long as I can remember and having to readjust myself to a forefoot strike took a bit of effort and more thought than I usually do while I run. As I gradually worked my way into the feel of running in the Spyridon on the trails as well as forefoot striking instead of heel striking, I managed to get sore in places that I'd never experienced soreness before. This was considered normal for someone who hadn't run in barefoot shoes before. The more I ran in the Spyridons and adjusted to forefoot running, I noticed my knees weren't getting as sore anymore. I've had knee surgery on one knee, and it had been giving me grief in certain activities especially running. I utilized the information Dr. Cucuzella gave to me on minimalist running while being more aware of my foot strike and having the balance of the "foot feel." It really made all the difference when it came to knee soreness, and the forefoot strike became more natural. Barefoot running was definitely a process for me, but I stuck with it, and now my foot strike is focused on where it should be, and I have less knee pain. It enables me to run for longer periods of time. The Spyridons were really put to the test in this process of reintroducing me to what most of us naturally did as kids. We ran barefoot with perfect form without having to even think twice about it. I would definitely recommend the Spyridon for light trail running when it comes to a barefoot shoe. Barefoot running may not be for everyone, but just always keep in mind that it can be a process, and if you're willing to be patient and gradually introduce it into your running regiment, you might be surprised at the results. The Vibram Fivefingers Spyridon is available at your local REI store, Wasatch Running, and the Salt Lake Running Company. Also join my page and follow me on Twitter. Fowler's Red Shoes draws loosely from the fairy tale of the same name, but this modern version of the Red Shoes morphs key plot elements and story points from Andersen's morality tale into a story about enduring life's difficulties by drawing strength from the memories of our departed loved ones. Like many fairy tales, the deeper meaning of this story may be lost on young children, but the story is yet entertaining and easy to understand. Originally, Andersen's version of The Red Shoes features Karen, an impious, vain, and selfish orphan girl who is taught a lesson when she tries on a pair of beautiful but bewitched red dancing shoes. After Karen puts on the red shoes, she can no longer take them off, and they keep dancing and dancing. Finally Karen goes to the executioner and begs him to cut the shoes off of her feet. In Andersen's ending, which is gruesome but true to the times, the executioner complies and Karen is finally able to repent of her ungodly ways. Several translations are available for free online. Gloria Fowler has done an admirable job of modernizing this fascinating story while keeping its themes intact, both without the gruesome details of the 19th century version and without its moralizing tone. Fowler's story simply begins "Karen's mother was the town shoemaker, and though they didn't have much money, they had creativity to spare ." In Fowler's story, when Karen is suddenly orphaned, her grief overtakes her and she clings to a lovely pair of red shoes that her mother made for her. The red shoes become an emblem of Karen's grief and embody Karen's loving memories of her mother. When she is feeling overcome with grief, Karen puts on the red shoes and dances in the forest, remembering her mother's free spirit. By clinging to the red shoes, Karen is able to survive. But one day, the Queen and princess drive through the forest in their carriage, and see Karen dancing there. In this story, it is the princess who is selfish, greedy, and spoiled, and she demands that Karen give her the prized red shoes. As an homage to the original story, Karen is told that if she doesn't hand over her shoes, the executioner will cut them off of her feet. I love the touching resolution to this story, which makes this modern retelling much more about overcoming grief and finding strength from within. Ultimately Karen realizes she doesn't need the pair of red shoes to remember her deceased mother because Karen's own creativity is a gift she has inherited from her mother. And no one can take that away from her. This conclusion is profound and awe inspiring. I was moved to tears by this story. And if you've read my other reviews, you'll know it is not the first time, but this particular story is a tender topic. Both the original Red Shoes story by Hans Christian Andersen and this new retelling are fundamentally stories about character transformation. The original story is a tale of repentance and redemption. The updated version tells of a different kind of redemption, the kind women experience when they believe in themselves and draw upon the memories of their loving relationships. Fowler shows a deep wisdom and a profound understanding of the way women relate to themselves and each other in this unique and transcendent children's story. The Red Shoes IllustrationsWhen I first saw the cover art for this book, I knew I had to read it, if only for the illustrations. Sun Young Yoo's pen and ink line art illustrations are organic, flowing, and subtly detailed. The end papers for the book include hundreds of uniquely designed shoes, all of them drawn in black and white with great detail. I love the way Yoo uses spare details to draw Karen's expressive eyes and flowing hair, which is just like her mother's. I also love the small but nimble hands on Yoo's drawings, perhaps inspired by Asian art. They are so expressive and seem to exude confidence and expertise. Each page is illustrated with a black ink drawing on a white background. This is Yoo's debut as a children's illustrator. Ironically, in a story about red shoes, there isn't one page with the color red. But somehow color is superfluous here. The use of black and white drawings in this fairy tale is suggestive of the illustrations used In Hans Christian Andersen's day. Many of his stories published in the late nineteenth century used black and white line art drawings too. The Red Shoes is published byAmmo Books, a small publisher of high end art booksincluding Charley Harper's ABC's, a children's board book inspired by the graphic design work of the late artist, Charley Harper. Ammo Books is a forward looking and trendsetting publisher with an eye for design, even in its children'sbooks. Read Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales Online for Free Andersen's Fairy Tales by H. C. Andersen Project Gutenberg Download the free eBook: Andersen's Fairy Tales by H. C. Andersen Listen to a free audio recording of The Red Shoes included on the Librivox free website containing public domain literature. His literary legacy is still considered a "Danish National Treasure" over 100 years after his death. Andersen wrote many well known children's stories. Many of these stories were written during the Victorian era and reflect the moralizing tone of literature written during that time. Some of Andersen's most famous stories include: The Little Mermaid The Ugly Duckling The Little Match Girl The Steadfast Tin Soldier The Emporer's New ClothesThe Princess and the Pea A Few Final Thoughts About The Transformation of The Red Shoes The Red Shoes is probably considered one of Andersen's lesser known stories in the United States. For those familiar with children's fairy tales, the red shoes story about a young girl who is punished for her vanity and ingratitude suddenly sounds familiar when we hear of dancing shoes that won't stop dancing. In fact, other modern stories continue to borrow elements from this morality tale, including the movie Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses, in which the villians are punished by dancing forever and ever. From a modern perspective, Andersen's version of The Red Shoes sounds like a harsh tale of retribution, and the punishment unfit for the young girl's crime. Even to a person who considers herself religious, Andersen's version of the tale seems extreme and makes the religious atmosphere of Denmark in Andersen's time seem cruel and overzealous. By taking key elements of the story and shifting them into new places, the story of the Red Shoes has become a wonderful story about overcoming grief and loss. Sale Cheap Men Nike Free Run 2 Anthracite White Green Grey Black,Women Nike Free Run 3 Liquid Lime Reflect Silver Volt Sunday is the big day. The Academy has voted and will shortly tell all. James Franco and Anne Hathaway have lightened our hearts with their playful and zany pre Ceremony banter and ad lead ins. All that's left is to butter the popcorn. And make predictions. Best picture: It's a horse race between The King's Speech and The Social Network. I believe The King's Speech will win, because it is, at its heart, a better under dog's story, plus it will be riding Colin Firth's coat tails with his Best Actor caliber performance. I liked The Social Network much more than I thought I would, but I believe The King's Speech, as a period piece, carries slightly more weight. Could be wrong. We will see. Director: David Fincher, The Social Network, is the frontrunner and his talents are a fine complement to Aaron Sorkin's incredible screenplay. My preference is for Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan, whose claustrophobic rendering of an artist's madness was without precedence. But I do believe Fincher will win this one. Actor: Colin Firth, all the way; he deserves this award for his strong performance in The King's Speech. If two awards could be given, a very close second is Jesse Eisenberg, who was remarkable in The Social Network. This award will be Eisenberg's sometime soon. But, probably not on Sunday night. Actress: My hope and pick is for Natalie Portman in Black Swan, who seems a shoe in, but the wild card could be Annette Bening, who was gifted with an incredible opportunity in The Kids Are All Right. If you haven't seen that movie yet, do yourself a favor and rent it. Highly unusual script with three strong performances by Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. Supporting Actor: All the money is on Christian Bale for The Fighter, a movie I did not like. Sorry, I feel there are much better films about boxing and determination (Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby is one; Rocky another, Raging Bull too). Bale was excellent in this film, but my wild card hope is for Geoffrey Rush in The King's Speech. In all likelihood, the award will go to Bale. Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo is the anointed shoe in, but again, not liking the movie makes it hard for me to root for her in this category, though I do think she will win it. My preference? Helena Bonham Carter for The King's Speech. This was a very different role for Bonham Carter and she gave an understated and yet steely and admirable performance. Really lovely. Maybe next time. Adapted Screenplay: If the odd, but supremely talented Aaron Sorkin doesn't win this category, he will be robbed. His snappy and sarcastic dialogue, coupled with David Fincher's fine tuned direction, made this film the success it is. Other strong performers in this category include Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini for Winter's Bone. Original Screenplay: David Seidler for The King's Speech is the frontrunner, but Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg could run away with this one for The Kids Are All Right. Animated Feature: Toy Story 3 will rule this category. Great story, heart strings tugged in all the right places. A shoe in. Foreign language film: Biutiful (Mexico), with Javier Bardem, seems to be to be the better choice than designated frontrunner, In a Better World (Denmark). Plus the Awards Ceremony cameras will get to pan and linger on Bardem and Penelope Cruz. We all win in that situation. So, those are my major picks. Feel free to add your own comments and share your own thoughts via the comments section on this page. The best part of Oscar night is seeing your favorites and rooting for them to win. So: don't wait. Let the rooting begin. Note that many of these films are now available for rental at your local Connecticut Redbox locations, your local library (check Bridgeport and Fairfield) as well as thru Netflix. Some film reviews you may enjoy: Never Say Never Justin Bieber, his rise to teen stardom and his dedicated fans. An interesting documentary and concert flick, fun and entertaining. The King's Speech outstanding performances by Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter make this unusual but powerful film well worth seeing. It has a high probability to sweep the Oscars, with Firth a shoe in for Best Actor. Black Swan Natalie Portman has won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her performance in this film and I predict she will win the Oscar as well. Winter's Bone an astonishing performance by Jennifer Lawrence, for which she has received an Academy award nomination. I look forward to more from this incredible young woman. Tangled great Disney flick, full of fun and action; good for the whole family. Keeping your Sanity this Holiday Season: DVDs for holiday viewing Love Other Drugs best for older teens and adults. Men Nike Free Run 2 Anthracite White Green Grey Black WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) An 85 year old woman who was robbed on her own doorstep last month received a free eye surgery Thursday. Ida Sue Collins was robbed of $400 in birthday money she planned to use to pay for her surgery.Collins said Thursday that she knows a caring person when she sees one and Dr. Millin Budev fits the bill."That right, that what I said there still good people in this world and he one of them," Collins said, referring to Budev, who performed her eye surgery for free.Last month a man stole Collins purse off her shoulder in broad daylight on the doorstep of her Charleston home. She had just returned from cashing her $400 worth of birthday checks at the bank she intended to use for eye surgery. The thief made off with all the money."Ms. Collins seemed just like the nicest lady and to see what happened to her was such an unfortunate thing and we just wanted to help in any way we could, and cataract surgery is what we do," said Budev of Carolina Cataract and Laser Center. After seeing Collins story on Live 5 News, Budev offered to do her surgery for free and provide the expensive medications that go along with the procedure. It was an opportunity Collins could not refuse."She doing great, she doing great," Budev said of Collins recovery. "Everything went really, really well. We lucky that we had the opportunity to help her. We very pleased."Since the robbery, Collins has received a couple checks in the mail from distant family members. One nephew included a note, applauding her for giving the robber a run for his money during the incident."He let me know that he saw me and that he was so proud of me for fighting it," Collins said. The largest check of all came from an anonymous man by mail to the Live 5 News studios. He told us that years ago he stole a purse from a woman and never got the chance to apologize. When he heard about Collins story, the man finally saw a chance at redemption and wrote a $500 check to her."There so many good things that happened out of this that I never dreamed would happen and it makes a big difference," said Collins after receiving the check.Collins has already put all the money toward her medical bills. Shortly after the robbery, Charleston police arrested cousins Manuel Scott and Rodney Scott, Jr. They are accused of teaming up to rob Collins and also face charges in three other robberies. The judge set Manuel Scott bond at a $1 million. Rodney Scott, Jr. received an $800,000 bond. Both are still being held at the Charleston County Detention Center. Most Popular StoriesMost Popular StoriesMore>>Cameras catch teens trying to break in to homeCameras catch teens trying to break in to homeUpdated: Wednesday, September 10 2014 7:54 PM EDT2014 09 10 23:54:48 GMT9/11 commemoration amid renewed terror threat9/11 commemoration amid renewed terror threatUpdated: Thursday, September 11 2014 11:48 AM EDT2014 09 11 15:48:36 GMTA solemn reading of the names.
