The Oswego State men's basketball team was undone by a second half New Paltz run to fall 83 75 to the Hawks on Tuesday night in Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego's loss drops its season mark to 10 3 overall and 4 2 in SUNYAC competition. Oswego trailed by three, 31 28, at the half and kept the contest close in the opening moments of the second period. Rashawn Powell hit a layup with 14:23 showing on the clock to make the score 45 41 in favor of the Hawks. The next 4:01 proved to be the game changer, however, with New Paltz completing a 17 3 spurt. During the span, Oswego was unable to make a field goal, scoring all three points from the charity stripe. The Hawks shot 7 for 10 over the four minute run, including two 3 pointers. At the end of the damage, the Hawks held its largest margin with an 18 point advantage at 62 44. Oswego would not go down without a fight, scrapping and clawing over the game's final 10 minutes, cutting the lead all the way to just four points. Elijah McLaurin tipped in a basket with 19 seconds remaining to make the score 79 75. New Paltz was able to make its final four free throws to secure the victory and stop the comeback. Brian Sortino had an outstanding second half while trying to pull the Lakers back into the game. The freshman finished with a career high 31 points, scoring 27 of those in the second period. His tally in the second stanza represented more than half of Oswego's point total in the period. Powell continued his double double dominance, making it the fourth time in the last five games that he has reached the feat. Ever since the 1960s, whenever NASA has debuted a new material or technology, the $76 billion a year golf industry has always been happy to find a way to equate the sport with high tech space research. Before NASA sends anything into orbit, the organization makes sure to send it through a dizzying array of tests some of which involve high speed cameras able to snap dozens of pictures per second. When the Ohio based Ben Hogan Company wanted to study how its golf balls spun after being hit, the company struck a deal with NASA to have a golfer tee off in front of NASA's cameras. By analyzing and reanalyzing the slow motion images, Ben Hogan Company designers were able to engineer carefully the spin characteristics of their next golf ball. For years, NASA has been working with the Connecticut based Memry Corporation to develop a flexible metal that would allow a spacecraft to fix itself after being struck by a micrometeorite. Using a process known as "shape memory effect," astronauts would simply heat the metal until it snapped back to its original shape. While it's not as dramatic, the Memry Corporation also adopted a similar type of flexible metal to create a golf club that bends ever so slightly when it strikes a ball, giving the golfer a split second more control. Who knows? NASA's self repairing metal could also one day be used to help repair the bent clubs of temperamental golfers. Space technology may even take credit for less foot odor on the green. Some high end golf shoes now include Outlast, a fabric equipped with hundreds of microparticles that are able to absorb or release heat. With temperatures in low Earth orbit at about 382 degrees Fahrenheit ( 270 degrees Celsius), Outlast was originally designed to keep spacewalking astronauts comfortable while building the International Space Station. On Earth, the material's temperature regulating abilities can cut sweating in golf shoes by almost 50 percent. With about 4 ounces (0.12 liters) less sweat floating around in your socks after a golf game, the effects on foot hygiene should be sweeping. I cringe with apprehension every time Hollywood gets hold of a favorite book a Pavlovian reaction that originated with the pitiful adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune." And handling flashbacks is an especially tricky business on screen, though it can be done well as we saw recently with "Sarah's Key." So we'll have to wait for the release of "World War Z" to see if director Marc Forster and star Brad Pitt can create a powerful narrative, without following Brooks' literary roadmap. Meanwhile, fans should feel free to sound a warning. It is an abuse of the book title. Try giving a 5 year old (with no previous exposure to renaissance art), a box of crayons, asking him/her to reproduce the Sistine Chapel, and charging admission to see the finished product. The production team of this film seems to be ill equipped and ignorant of the original design. The brilliance of the book is its attention to detail on the grandest of stages. A shame for Pitt. I rather enjoyed his renditions of Tyler Durden and Benjamin Button. I see Pitt's face and "World War Z" smothering 32oz soda buckets and burger wrappers in my crystal ball.
