It has taken a little more than a decade, but the boyfriend of murdered high school sophomore Leah Freeman will answer charges that he killed her. He is set to appear in court on Thursday. On June 28, 2000 Leah, 15, vanished while walking home from a friends house. The only evidence that something terrible had happened to her at that time was chilling"one of her tennis shoes was left on the sidewalk. Forensic testing showed blood spatter on the bottom of the shoe. The sample matched Leah blood, and experts determined a pattern consistent with medium to high velocity blood spatter, which can happen when an object a bullet or a car, for example hits a person while traveling at high speed. Could someone have run over her with a car"either accidentally or intentionally"and then tried to remove all evidence of the crime? A month after that, Leahs body was found in the woods near that dirt road. What Happened to Leah Freeman? A 10 year old cold case is notoriously hard to solve, but police (apparently) believe that they can put the puzzle pieces together and deposit them in boyfriend Nick McGuffin lap. Fact: Leah had a fight with her friend and decided to walk home without waiting for McGuffin to pick her up. Fact: McGuffin returned to the friends house an hour later, and even called them, to see if Leah had returned. Fact: Police could not, in 2000, tie McGuffin to Leah Freemans disappearance and murder. In January, police re opened this cold case, looking at it with fresh eyes and new crime scene analysis technologies. They presented their finding to a Grand Jury, who heard testimony from more than 100 people. The Grand Jury handed down an indictment against McGuffin. They arrested him on August 24, and hes being held on $2 million bail pending trial. Them most obvious evidence that police have against McGuffin is perhaps the fact that the trunk of his car had been recently gutted around the time of Leahs disappearance. (Source: CNN). Fifty five young runners, along with about 15 adult mentors, are gradually but determinedly working up to the 13.1 mile run scheduled for June 7. The runners are members of a fitness club called Willie Fit. Now in its seventh year at Wilsonville High School, the club brings together a diverse group of students and introduces them to the sport of running. The students took a great stride March 12, when each runner received a new pair of running shoes, for free. Portland Running Company provides the shoes each year. Valued at $100 or more, the club paid a discounted price of just $50 per pair. Proper footwear is the club biggest challenge and expense each year, according to faculty adviser Lyndi Tucker. until now, they wearing Vans. We had kids wearing Uggs. They wearing whatever they have, Tucker said. Mariana Ignacio, a WHS junior, joined Willie Fit for the first time this year. She beamed as she showed off her new shoes. will be the first professional shoes I have, she said. are really good. They feel different from other shoes. She joined the club on a friend recommendation. told me they give you free shoes and it a really good way to get exercise. It was a good way to start running, she said. A swimmer, she is new to running. The first few club meetings were rough for her, she said, but after three weeks, she is now ready to run 5 miles. Nick Crosby, a sophomore, is another rookie runner who joined Willie Fit on a friend recommendation. been a lot of fun, he said. been easier than I thought. Four miles is kind of intimidating, but when you get out there, it not so bad. A non runner previously, the shoes he received March 12 were his first running shoes. have just one pair of shoes, he said, indicating the all purpose shoes on his feet. His new running shoes, he said, are comfortable. Crosby and Ignacio seem typical of the club participants. Tucker said Willie Fit participants generally come from non athletic backgrounds and may not have participated on a team before. Completing the half marathon, for many, will be their first experience setting and achieving a goal and their first time feeling the sense of accomplishment and pride that comes with stretching to meet it. With the June 7 half marathon as their ultimate goal, Willie Fit members gather three times a week to work toward goals that are both more immediate and more obtainable. Each Tuesday and Thursday, the group runs for specified lengths of time, starting with a 15 minute run out and a 15 minute run back. On Saturdays, group members get together and run for distance together, adding 1 mile each week. This past weekend, they conquered the 5 mile mark. Saturday when we run our miles, it the longest we ever done, Tucker said. say to them, you ever run three miles? You just did. With its emphasis on goal setting and improving fitness, everyone is welcome to join, and goals can be adjusted to fit students realities, she added. Club members run, jog and walk. have seven minute miles and we have 16 minute miles. At first, they all think they runners. Then they realize they not. At first, they think it embarrassing to walk. Then they see adults are walking too and other kids, she said. Portland Running Company Dave Harkin was on hand to help students find their perfect pair of shoes. He offered encouragement and tips to students as he helped them try on various shoes. a better fit for your foot, Harkin told Matt Taylor after the WHS junior returned from a brief trial run in his new shoes. for making it back three years. Harkin and Portland Running Company are veteran supportors of the program. This is the company seventh year providing running shoes to Willie Fit members. been here since the beginning, Harkin said. such a great program. It not competitive. They not wearing a team jersey. Their accountability is only to themselves. It a pretty neat thing and a great life lesson. Harkin expressed interest in helping other school running groups. schools have to have the need for it. And they also have to have the support, he said. interested in helping all the schools develop programs like this. Community support is critical to Willie Fit, Tucker said. Alongside Portland Running Company, the city of Wilsonville gave the club a $2,500 opportunity grant. Oregon Road Runners donated $1,000 and Providence Health Services gave $500. The club also receives 40 free entry fees to the half marathon, courtesy of Better Series. Discounted entry fees are available for the 15 adults who volunteer with Willie Fit. Some may need boots, but be sure your ankle problems are not just due to a lack of exercise before you settle for backpacking in hiking boots. You may also need hiking boots if you carry more than thirty pounds when you backpack. Cut the weight down, though, and you'll be more comfortable anyhow. Why Running Or Hiking Shoes? Feet stay cooler in a good running shoes than in hiking boots. This means fewer blisters. After switching to running shoes and lightweight socks years ago, I stopped getting blisters. I don't mean fewer blisters. I mean haven't had one blister since I switched. Not even after a 110 mile 7 day trek in the Rockies, for example. How To Choose Your Shoes Try to keep below two pounds per pair, unless you have size 13 feet. If the weights are not shown in a catalog, you'll have to guess which hiking shoes are lighter based on the description and photo. Quality shoes have soles stitched to the uppers, so look under the insoles (a removable insole is another sign of quality shoes). You can usually find a good pair of running shoes that weighs less than 28 ounces for under $80, or half of that on closeouts. There's nothing quite as liberating as ditching the heavy pack and heavy boots and hitiing the trail in running shoes. You get to go more miles, and in comfort. You get to run up a hill just to see what's there. I have yet to meet a person who has tried backpacking in hiking shoes or running shoes and then returned to boots.

In a dream, while needing to take a piss, Nobacon didn't know which door to use in a public toilet because the signs said "Chumba" and "Wamba" instead of "Men" and "Women." Huh. Gender confusion is kind of an odd thing to base your band name on, or even admit to publicly. This is basically the band name equivalent of one of those noisy conversations at a bar where you're drunkenly confiding something to a friend when the music suddenly stops playing, and the room goes quiet, and you're there yelling "I SIT DOWN WHEN I PEE." And then the stares start. An Australian pop band, Savage Garden had a brief spell of success in the late 90s when the world's appetite for "weeny, gutless music" was reaching its zenith. Duran Duran have acknowledged that they're named after a character in the Jane Fonda movie, Barbarella. For those of you that aren't huge perverts, Barbarella is an erotic science fiction adventure from the 1960s, assuming you'll allow us to use pretty loose definitions of "erotic" and "adventure."
