I also have an affinity for creating things, whether it be painting, sculpture, photo, video you name it and yes, that includes quilting. My Aunt asked me to make a quilt of several of her late step father's plaid wool LL Bean shirts as a gift for her mother. I already had an idea of what I wanted to do, but I decided to search online for additional inspiration. I was surprised by what I found. Everywhere I looked, all I came across were T shirt quilts. Well T shirts aren't the only shirts you can use! Read on! What Is Upcylcing Anyways?Recycling, in general, involves converting or extracting useful materials from a product and creating a different product or material. Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value. It's the opposite of downcycling, which is the other half of the recycling process. Downcycling involves converting materials and products into new materials of lesser quality. Most recycling involves converting or extracting useful materials from a product and creating a different product or material. Give it a shot! My Design ConceptI've seen a lot of t shirt quilts, and they are great, but don't be afraid to step outside the lines! My Aunt gave me 8 plaid button down shirts to do as I wished with in creating this lap quilt. I ended up using 6 different shirts to make a lap quilt that is approximately 60x60 inches. I had several colors and patterns to consider when laying out the design. I wanted it to be very evident that this quilt was made out of button down shirts, so my Aunt's mother would easily recognize the shirts used, not to mention it's always a nice touch, in upcycling designs, to leave many of the original characteristics of the materials in place. It makes it easy for others to see how something old was used to create something new and fabulous! So I began doodling out very simple, straight forward concepts for square designs. I'll be the first to admit, that I have to be careful with projects. Sometimes I bite off more than I can chew! So my main focus was SIMPLE. I chose to make "artful cuts" in the shirts, this technique is not for everyone, especially if you are brand new to cutting pieces for your quilt. I carefully laid the shirts out flat, and using the lines of my cutting mat as a guide, I centered the specific area I wanted to cut as my square. So as you can see, some of the squares have an original shirt pocket right in the middle of them, and others have the line of buttons going diagonal across the square. For more variety, I carefully removed the leather elbow patches from one shirt and stitched them onto squares. The other square design you will see is the shirt collars stitched to a square. I simply laid the collars onto the square as I liked them, then pinned them in place and trimmed the excess. It's very important to be precise and have all your corners SQUARE. So if you don't have these items or something very similar get out there and pick them up before you even begin. You'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration, eye balling it is not as accurate as it seems! Fiskars 45mm Contour Rotary Cutter (195210 1001)I have never found another sewing related cutting tool that has been better than Fiskars! I love mine! There are a few basic quilting concepts that everyone should know before they begin to design a pattern. Although there are literally hundreds of different design styles for quilts, I am going to stick with the most basic, which is squares with simple borders all straight line cuts. Here's what to keep in mind. Refer to the diagram above to get a visual of what I am about to explain. It all starts with your square. Choose the size you want your square to be. (Remember the bigger the square the easier and faster your quilt will come together.) I chose 10x10. Now choose the width you want your border to be. Since my square was 10inches and I wanted my borders to be very strong in the design I chose to make them 3 inches wide and to match up with the square, they had to be 10 inches long. Then you cut out your smaller intersecting squares. (These are where all the inner border pieces meet.) So the size for my small intersecting square was 3x3 because my borders were 3 inches wide. You see how the dimensions of each side of each piece matches that of the one right next to it? I wanted my lap quilt to be square in general so I decided to make it 4 squares by 4 squares, but if you wanted to make a rectangular quilt, you could easily do 4 squares by 5 squares, or six, etc. It's up to you! Once you have all your pieces cut its important to assemble them in rows. So first lay them all out on the floor or another flat surface to make sure you aren't missing anything. Then, pick a direction, either horizontal or vertical, and start sewing those pieces together. Once you have sewn all of your rows, now sew each row together, making certain that all intersections match as closely as you can. By assembling your quilt this way, you have a better chance at having all the intersecting lines meet perfectly, just like a pro! Finishing Up That Upcycled Quilt The front of the quilt will, by far, take up most of your total quilt making time, I figured it would be nice to add some details about what to do for the back. If you are really gung ho you can sew together scraps of material for the back as well, but as I mentioned, I have a little bit of project ADD, and once I conquer the front of the quilt, I want the back to be quick! I just bought some basic material, stitched it together, and cut it to fit the dimensions of my quilt. Now it's time to put it all together. First you want to stitch the batting to your quilt front. Be sure to put pins not just along the edges, but throughout the middle of the quilt too, this helps to anchor it you don't want your batting to shift around. The weight of the material is tricky enough to handle while trying to sew a straight line. Once you have stitched the edges, take the pins out of the edges, but leave the pins in the middle. Now you want to sew on the backside material. Remember that the faces you want to be showing when you are done, need to be facing one another while you sew. That means, when you pin, you want the quilt front and the backside material to be facing inward to one another. Pin this in place and also put more anchor pins. Stitch the edges again, but this time, leave about 12 inches open. This hole is needed to turn the quilt right side out. Remove all pins. Take a butter knife or other dull, but sturdy tool and reach inside the quilt to push out the points of each corner. Then, carefully fold in and pin that 12 inch gap. Stitch around all the edges once more, this will keep the quilt edges from "rolling" ensuring that the front STAYS front and center. VOILA!.

IT over. My adventure into the world of Active Travel has come to an end four weeks after I tentatively threw my leg over my bike and started riding to and from work. But it isn really over. Because, with the zeal found in most converts, I don intend to stop. I also fortunate because I can ride to work. I don live that far from the office (under 20 minutes on the bike and about the same in the car) and the terrain is favourable. Yes, there are a few hills but they aren mountains and as my fitness has increased, they become easier. There are showers and lockers here at the Bully, which is not something every office can boast. Riding any distance other than a flat, relaxed cruise raises at least a bit of a sweat and it not only nice for you to have a wash and a change of clothes at the end of the journey. I can guarantee your workmates think so too. I also don have to take a lot of stuff to and from work on a regular basis. I don have a ute load of tools, for example, and I don drop the kids off to school on my way. But even if you aren able to use a bike to commute, here are some statistics about the way we use our cars that point to something we all kind of know we lazy. In southeast Queensland, 10 per cent of trips you make in the car are less than 1km and 30 per cent are less than 3km. Half are under 5km. OK, plenty of those trips might involve taking or getting something, such as kids or groceries, but think about how many times you leap in the car to get a carton of milk or take a DVD back. It would be almost as quick, and a whole lot better for you, to leap on your bike rather than fire up the car. See! The zeal of a convert. There have been other benefits from this too. I think I will be a more aware driver after spending time so low on the road "food chain". When all there is between you and the vehicle next to you is a T shirt, shorts and helmet, you become so much more aware of what going on and anticipating what going to happen next. Will that car back out of the driveway without seeing me? Is the person sitting in that parked car up ahead going to throw open their door? Is the truck trailing me because it wants to turn left going to stay patient as I climb this hill? It also shown me how many cycleways there are on the Coast and how much more there could be. Federation Walk, for example, is a real asset and it would be wonderful if it was one day finished but there a lot more than just wishful thinking involved in that coming to fruition. But compared with some parts of the world, our urban areas are a less cycle friendly than they could be. Europe leads the way and considering it snows for a goodly part of the year in many parts of that continent, surely our climate lends itself to a stronger cycle culture. With more of this infrastructure, I convinced more people would see cycling as a viable transport and/or recreation, with huge benefits to them and the environment. I know from my experience I much prefer to ride on the path than the road.
