This is a wonderful trail, where you pass hikers, fisherman and (yes believe it or not) people still panning for gold. The hike is technical with several river crossings and boulder hops thru the river bed, but I would classify it as moderate in nature and accessible by most hikers. We did lose the trail a few times, but because of the low flowing river at this time of year, we were easily able to pick the trail up again by simply heading north up the riverbed. Though there are several side trails that you can take, a good landmark for this up and back hike is the famed Bridge to Nowhere. This arched bridge built in 1936 was originally constructed to provide a thruway connecting San Gabriel and Wrightwood. Long abandoned for that purpose, the bridge now acts as a good lunch spot and turn around point on the trail as well as a place for the brave to bungee jump 10 stories. Roundtrip for our hike was (7.5hrs) including lunch, so do be conscience of time. My wife and I left the trailhead at 9:00am and returned with decent light at 4:30pm. While seemingly early with the sun setting at 5:00pm, with steep canyon walls surrounding you, darkness begins to settle in from the shadows a bit early around 4pm. This is a great hike for anyone, especially for those living in Los Angeles, looking to escape for the day. This hike contains all the elements of an outstanding experience. Towering rock faces cut through by high altitude runoff, mountain sheep, river fording, and The Bridge to Nowhere (a unique novelty). Even though it is a 900 foot elevation gain, the gain spread out over the 5 miles to the bridge. The strenuous part is the need to ford the river many times, climb over rocks, and walk through sandy river bottom sections. Elevation gain is gradual. The bridge is quite a site. The bridge was built in 1937 as one of the projects started by the government to generate work (sounds familiar). When you see the bits and pieces of the road and the large boulders pushed down the canyon, you can see why it never should have been started. Standing on the bridge (perfectly good and serviceable) you get a great view of the river below. People actually Pungy Jump on the weekends. I was surprised by how technical this trail was. There were several stream crossings through fast current. This was likely due to the spring run off so the streams may be smaller in the summer or fall. The trail is tough to find at times and branches considerably. Advice: When hiking along the right side of the stream stay as high as possible. You will encounter pieces of the washed out road and the main trail generally follows the tarmac ruins. Also, give yourself plenty of time to complete this hike. We left the trail head around 12:30 and barely made it back before dark. I wouldn't want to do any of the scrambling sections in the dark. What an awesome hike! Our boy scout troop has hiked many, many trails in the San Gabriel mountains. I believe this hike ranks at the top. The water was running high (but not too high), above the knee (mid thigh) was the deepest. The hike is very technical in terms of footing and picking one's route. Because of this technical nature, the hike takes quite a long time for its distance (about 8 hours for the 10 mile roundtrip). The hike was beautiful and challenging. The Bridge (and the bungee jumpers) was a terrific payoff for the hike. I have to admit to having done 14ers and many 4000 footers (Washington 3 times) and this one kicked my sorry butt. Nothing in the trail descriptions or trip reports prepared me mentally for what lay ahead. I counted 8 stream crossings, I believe and most were 10 feet wide or more. The water was up a bit and I knew others must be more agile than I am for I decided to take off the hiking boots 7 out of the 8 crossings and go across barefoot. I just didn't think I had what it took nor could I figure out how to stay dry while crossing. Taking off and putting on shoes cost time. Then when I got past the Roof Rock and started climbing the steep section of boulders, I lost sight of any further cairns and paintings. I admit the brain automatically assumed the trail must still go up so up I went to a dead end. I saw some hikers below and figured out I was supposed to take a sharp right at the last cairn so did so, again losing time. At this point I had to consider my cutoff time for summitting (I had left my itinerary with a friend and what time to call 911). I pushed on for a 1/2 hour then decided I was still out of reach of the summit by a good 1/2 hour to 45 minutes (doubled for the time to get back down). So, I called it a day. Oh, and let me also say that I didn't get a good feel of just how steep that boulder climb was gonna be (let's say 90 percent grade). Translated that means I was crawling up and definitely reverse crawling down. Stand up and come down? Are you kidding me? On my butt worked just fine especially considering the number of loose rocks and what a misstep would possibly mean. Of course, that cost time, too. So, ascent to within .5 miles from the top took 5.5 hours. Descent from that point took 3.75 hours. Let's just say this trip shook my self confidence. I thought Washington was going to be the toughest and I have that one behind me. Wow! Did I learn a lesson. "There is no thought of him leaving the campaign," Mr. Walter said. "Denny acted completely with Mickey's blessing.
