When an empty home in Long Island exploded this morning, 21 people in neighboring homes were injured by flying glass and debris. Items from inside the homes such as shoes and bedding flew up into the trees. The blast happened at 10:44 am Easter Sunday at 43 Fourth Street in Brentwood, Suffolk County, New York. The blast was heard 7 miles away in Islip, New York. Unbelievably, no one was killed. Currently inspectors are trying to determine the cause of the blast. It is possible it was a ruptured gas line, but arson has not been ruled out. What a horrible thing to happen on a peaceful Sunday morning. And even more amazing is that when the home in Long Island exploded, it was empty. Surely, if people had been in that home the outcome may have been deadly. Neighbors described the noise as an earthquake; some said it sounded like a plane had had the house. While the 21 injured people were taken to two hospitals in the area, most of the injuries were minor, according to Fox News. The home in Long Island exploded and the rubble was searched using thermal imaging cameras to be sure no one was still in the home. The owners of record of the empty home are Donna and Heriberto Soto. It was being renovated and it was for sale. The value of the destroyed home was $327,600. Hopefully the Soto family has insurance on the empty home. What a horrible situation for the neighbors and the community, especially on this Easter Sunday.
