After years of using and promoting Titleist clubs and balls, Phil Mickelson, the No. 4 golfer in the world, is looking for a new brand to back. According to Golfweek magazine, Titleist has released Mickelson from his contract 16 months early. The issue revolved around Mickelson desire to renegotiate his deal after winning the Masters golf tournament in April, the magazine reported, and Titleist declined to raise Mickelson reported $4 million a year contract. But with Mickelson on the market, analysts and golf industry insiders say there will be plenty of companies, including local equipment makers Callaway Golf and TaylorMade, likely to show interest in adding Mickelson to their roster of pro players. "Certainly any company would be interested in talking to the Masters champion," said Larry Dorman, Callaway spokesman. "You would assume that anyone in the golf business would want to have a player of that caliber." Terry McAndrew, publisher of Web Street Golf Report, an industry newsletter, said Mickelson is an especially appealing figure because of his recent successes on the PGA Tour, his media friendly personality as well as his willingness to talk about golf equipment. In the past, Mickelson made headlines when he blamed Tiger Woods problems on his Nike clubs. "He immensely popular with the golf people," McAndrew said of Mickelson. The question is which company is willing to pay the top dollar Mickelson would demand. John Steinbach, spokesman for TaylorMade, agreed that most of the big name golf companies would be interested in talking with Mickelson about promoting their products. In TaylorMade case, he said, the company tries to achieve a balancing act between big name players and the overall number of tour players using its equipment. TaylorMade likes to claim that its drivers are used by the most golfers on the PGA Tour. "The challenge is, can you afford the who and the how manys," Steinbach said. "You want to have marquee players for sure, but it costly." There also the question of how much golf companies get in return for investing in high profile players. "They are shooting at a small percentage of people who play golf," said Alexander Paris, a financial analyst who covers the golf industry. "They think people do pay attention. They think that if a person wins a lot of tour events using a Titleist driver or a Callaway driver that people will buy it." But not all companies are willing to pay, McAndrew said, pointing out that Titleist just released Mickelson. Titleist, he said, is playing golf version of Moneyball, referring to the book detailing the Oakland A ability to have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball while still having a playoff contending team. It doesn hurt that Titleist also has a number of other high profile players using its products. "It one of the few companies that can afford to say goodbye," McAndrew said. "They have Ernie Els and Davis Love III." Mickelson also might be a less attractive commodity because his deal with Titleist did not require him to wear a hat or visor with its logo, McAndrew said. Instead, he has a deal with BearingPoint, a business consulting firm, to wear its headgear. For branding purposes, hats are the key thing television viewers see, according to Sponsorship Research Institute, a marketing research firm. In analyzing the 2002 Masters, SRI found that 43 percent of the golf specific coverage came from golfers on the green, and sponsors were able to generate incremental exposure as the camera focused on the players lining up for putts. Not surprisingly, the branded hats and visors were more likely to be seen by TV viewers than logos on a player shirt or his golf bag. Still, McAndrew said plenty of companies will be lining up to sign Mickelson check. He predicted both Callaway and Nike would try to woo the golfer who grew up in the San Diego area. Callaway, which has struggled to maintain its market share this year, would be buoyed by having one of the top players endorse its golf balls and clubs. "If he goes with Callaway, it validates its products, especially its golf balls," McAndrew said. "It would be a shot in the arm.".
